VENICIAN VETTE PARTS CARS

The glory days of the Corvette have generally coincided with the availability of an alphanumeric soup of engine and equipment packages. Go back to the 1960s and early ’70s, and all sorts of near mythical combinations show up, with the LT1, L88, LS6, ZR-1, and Z06 being the most notable. Contrast that with the Vette’s Dark Ages between the OPEC oil crisis and the introduction of the fourth-generation Corvette, the C4, in 1984, when the options lists were limited to some slightly more powerful engines and sportier suspensions.

The C4 and the subsequent C5 marked a return to form—and evocative alphanumerics associated with performance again appeared on the options lists. The 375-hp ZR-1 model debuted in 1990, though it was pricey—nearly double the sticker of a base 245-hp coupe. A Z51 suspension package was also available through the C4’s (overly long) 13-year life. There was no ZR-1 for the 1997–2004 C5, but the Z06 performance model, latterly with 405 horsepower, commanded a premium of less than 20 percent over a base Corvette.

The instrument panel and door trim areas make extensive use of cast skin, which retains the look and feel of genuine leather. Anodized aluminum accents the interior in key functional areas, such as the manual shift knob and door release buttons. The C6 team also made strides to improve quality. All of the major user interfaces—the hood, the doors, and the rear hatch—have been designed for top-quality performance, look, and feel. The hood is still forward-hinged, but is 15 percent smaller, 35 percent lighter, and 40 percent stiffer than the previous Corvette’s. The rear hatch has a power-operated single-cinching latch for better fit and easy operation. In addition, there are no traditional door handles on the 2005 Corvette. The C6 features GM’s Keyless Access with Push Button Start technology, which detects the proximity of the key fob and then unlocks the doors and allows the car to be started. The 2005 Corvette coupe is slated to begin production in the third quarter, with a convertible version hitting the assembly line in fall 2004.

Furthermore, the Z06's suspension was retuned to perform even better than before. On the LS1-powered side of the Corvette equation, there were revisions to the sound systems and a new Electron Blue paint color.

Chevrolet acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the Corvette for 2003 with, naturally, a 50th Anniversary Edition Corvette. Available either as an LS1-powered hatchback coupe or convertible, the 50th Anniversary car got special deep red paint, a new Magnetic Selective Ride Control system and a bunch of logos. Of course, it was also used to pace the '03 edition of the Indianapolis 500. Other Corvettes got more standard equipment, including a power passenger seat and dual-zone climate control system. The Z06 was basically unchanged.

The Viper is pretty familiar now. The current-generation roadster went on sale in 2003, with the coupe following as a 2006 model. In 2008, it got a 600-hp, 8.4-liter V-10 with trick variable valve timing to replace the 510-hp, 8.3-liter unit. Dodge also revised the suspension and fitted a GKN torque-sensing differential, which made the car more stable and forgiving.

The Murciélago has been around for a while, too, debuting in 2001. Tracing its lineage back to the Countach of 1974, the car was revised in 2007 as the LP640, featuring a 6.5-liter V-12 making 632 horsepower, an increase of 60 over the previous 6.2-liter engine’s output. Lamborghini also added carbon-ceramic brakes, tidied up the interior, and tweaked the suspension.

Running a revised high-compression, low-reciprocating-weight version of the LS1 dubbed the LS6, the Z06 went into battle with 385 horsepower, shooting its exhaust out a titanium system. The Z06 also got a special FE4 suspension system that was stiffer and had thicker anti-sway bars than other C5s, special lightweight wheels and bigger, lighter, more aggressive Goodyear tires that weren't run-flat in design. In just about every way, the Z06 either matched or exceeded the vaunted ZR-1's performance and did so for far less money.

Regular C5 owners weren't completely overlooked during 2001, however, with the LS1 seeing its output increase from 345 to 350 horsepower. It was also an even more flexible and torque-rich engine.
